Each year,  a 6-week training course teaches residents and business and government representatives on topics of recycling, waste prevention, composting, local solid waste infrastructure, e-waste, hazardous waste and much more. The course includes an extensive training manual, presentations from regional experts.

Weekly classes will take place on Tuesday evenings in the Rogue Disposal corporate office at One West Main Street in downtown Medford. There will be one Saturday field trip to a local transfer station, state-of-the-art landfill and waste water treatment plant.

  • Course Fees: $75  – need-based scholarships may be available.
  • All course participants are required to have regular access to an active email address; frequent communication between the MR program and participants is made electronically.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection Days

The spring event has concluded. Jackson County residence are welcome to attend the fall Josephine County event, scheduled for Saturday, September 24th Contact Southern Oregon Sanitation for details.

Additional fall event for pesticide users

For forest and agricultural landowners, farmers and other commercial pesticide users: The Oregon Department of Agriculture is hosting a free waste pesticide collection event at the Transfer Station in White City on Saturday, October 1, 2022. This is your chance to turn in legacy pesticides, soon-to-be prohibited pesticides, pesticides in damaged containers, or any pesticides you no longer need or plan to use. THE 2022 SPRING EVENT IS SCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY MAY 7TH

WHERE: 8001 Table Rock Rd., White City at the Rogue Transfer Station

WHEN: Household drop-off is Saturday, May 7th, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Qualifying businesses: Friday, May 6th by application and appointment only. Click HERE to get the application form.

COST: Households, no cost    Businesses, based on inventory of waste (see application form)

This is a drive through event. Just put your waste in your trunk, pop it open when you arrive, and the trained staff will unload all of your items for you so you don’t have to get out of your car.

Examples of what to bring

  • Cleaning supplies (window cleaner, drain cleaner, bathroom cleaner, anything containing bleach or ammonia)
  • Pesticides and insecticides
  • Swimming pool chemicals
  • Weed killers not currently approved for use
  • Paint remover
  • Old or toxic wood preservatives
  • Light ballasts
  • Alkaline and rechargeable batteries
  • Thermostats containing mercury

What NOT to bring

  • No paint (see paintcare.org for more info)
  • No 55-gallon drums
  • No fluorescent light tubes (see Transfer Station for more info)
  • No medical or biological waste (see Medical Waste for more info)
  • No asbestos (see Asbestos for more info)
  • No propane tanks (see Transfer Station for more info)
  • No antifreeze (see Transfer Station for more info)
  • No explosives
  • No radioactive materials
  • No ammunition
  • No commercial or industrial waste
  • No waste in containers larger than 5 gallons

While these materials are not accepted at the Household Hazardous Waste Event, many of them can be recycled for a fee at the Transfer Station. Learn more.

What about paint?

We do not accept paint at this event. Thanks to an Oregon law enacted in 2010, there are now local paint stores that will accept your latex and oil-based paints year-round. Go to paintcare.org and enter your zip code to find participating stores in your area. We recommend calling the store to make sure they have room to accept your paint before you visit.

Waste Prevention tips

Buy only what you need then use it up.
If you end up with products left over, share them with family, friends and neighbors. Read the labels before you buy. Watch for words like “danger,” “warning,” and “caution.” Follow the directions carefully. Whenever possible, consider using a safer alternative.
