Note: Classes can be tailored to one grade level up or down for more flexibility.

Grades K-2: Reduce Reuse Recycle!

A discussion about what happens to our stuff after we are done with it. This lesson includes a short 10 minute video called Recycle Rex and a sorting game. Reduce, reuse, recycle is examined as an alternative to landfill disposal. Props include samples of recyclable/non-recyclable packaging and compost material.

Grades 3-5: Reduce, Reuse...Then Recycle!

A look at ways to reduce our waste and reuse what we purchase. This is a hands-on presentation with lots of props and interactive discussion. A video called The Rotten Truth (VHS only) is also available.

Grades 6-12: Trash Facts Jeopardy

This lesson provides a fun way to learn about solid waste facts. Categories include history of garbage disposal back as far as Ancient Greece, recycling trivia, waste reduction and reuse methodology, local solid waste industry facts, statistics on worldwide trash disposal, famous people in garbage and recycling, and imaginative future solutions for our solid waste disposal dilemmas. Comments on answers and questions can generate a lively discussion of all issues involved in the solid waste industry.

Grades 9-12: Slide Show and Discussion

This lesson offers an in-depth look at the Rogue Valley’s local solid waste industry with discussions on our area’s regional landfill operation. Social implications of continued waste generation versus waste prevention/reuse alternatives will also be discussed.

Field Trips: Field trips to the Transfer Station and Recycling Center in Ashland, to the Materials Recovery Facility in White City, and to the Dry Creek Landfill are highly recommended and available upon request.
